Bonnier Books UK's Hot Key has acquired two YA titles from debut author Joya Goffney.
Assistant editor Carla Hutchinson acquired English language UK and Commonwealth rights for two titles from Cecilia de la Campa, executive director of Global Licensing at Writers House, on behalf of Brianne Johnson. The first title, Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry, will be published in paperback in summer 2021, with the second title to follow in summer 2022.
Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry is inspired by Goffney’s own school experiences and follows protagonist Quinn in a "heartfelt" and "tortured" high-school romance.
Hutchinson said: "As a team, we fell in love with Joya’s immersive storytelling full of juicy secrets, leap-off-the-page chemistry, and the perfect enemy-to-lover romance. At the centre of the story is a teenage Black girl’s experience within a YA high school romcom and her journey of identity and self-discovery. We could not be more thrilled to publish Joya at Hot Key Books."
Goffney added "I'm excited to be working with such a passionate, inclusive and innovative team as Hot Key Books! I wrote Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry as a gift to Black girls —to give us something fun to read about Black joy, Black love and Black growth without getting too bogged down in the pain of it all. I didn't grow up with many books about girls who look like me, so I'm excited for this chance to give the world more stories about us."
