Dead Ink Books is to publish Ros Anderson's debut novel The Hierachies next summer.
UK and Commonwealth rights were bought from Samuel Hodder at Blake Friedmann after the text was published by Dutton Books, Penguin USA, earlier this month.
The novel is set in the near future and tells the story of Sylv.ie, a "sentient artificial woman designed to please her ‘husband’".The synopsis explains: "Laced with dark, sly humour, Ros Anderson’s deeply observant debut novel is less about the fear of new technology than about humans’ age-old talent for exploitation. In a world where there are now two classes of women—'born' and 'created'—the growing friction between them may have far-reaching consequences no one could have predicted."
Nathan Connolly, publisher director at the Liverpool-based press, said: "The Hierarchies is an elegantly written novel that brings real life to artificial intelligence and pushes at societal boundaries. It is an immensely readable odyssey into a not too unrecognisable future and we can’t wait to bring it to UK readers."
Anderson originally trained as a dancer but now works as a copywriter and design journalist. She said: "I am delighted to be published by Dead Ink, a house I have admired as a reader for their bold approach to exciting new voices and ideas. To join the ranks of their authors is a thrill for me and feels like the perfect home for my debut."
The novel will be released in June 2021.
