Author Nicola Davies has signed a deal to write 10 children’s books, including picture books and rhyming stories, for independent Welsh publisher Graffeg.
The first titles are scheduled for publication in spring 2016 and include The Word Bird, an illustrated rhyme book, for young children and Perfect, a short story about the relationship between a child and his disabled sibling.
Davies says: “I'm incredibly excited about my projects with Graffeg and the opportunity they offer to nurture talented new illustrators. They also give me a new space in which to stretch my creative wings, one close to home and to my family's roots in Wales.”
Graffeg hopes to work with young illustrators and has already hired a recent graduate of Swansea College of Art, Abbie Cameron, to illustrate The Word Bird and two other as-yet-unnamed titles.
Davies is also the author of the non-fiction picture book Tiny, published by Walker Books in 2014, which explains the world of microbes to children.
Her deal with Graffeg marks the publisher’s first steps into children’s books. Based in Llanelli, it also creates books based on food, arts, culture, architecture, gardens, landscapes, photography, sport and lifestyle.
