David Graham has been appointed managing director of Aurum and its UK trade publishing division, also titled Aurum. Former Granta staff Alex Clark and Rosalind Porter are also to set up a new literary imprint at the publisher.
Graham was previously m.d. of Granta and Canongate, and will be creating a new imprint titled Union Press with Clark and Porter. Clark will join as an editor-at-large, working part time. Porter will take on the position of editorial director for the imprint.
Bill McCreadie stepped down as m.d. of the Quarto-owned publisher in January.
Graham said: "I am delighted to be joining Quarto at what promises to be exciting times in the development of its UK trade division and I look forward to working with my new colleagues at Aurum, directing its diverse and dynamic non-fiction list to even greater heights.
"The new imprint will add an extra dimension to the Aurum offer and enable it to focus on its very sound commercial strengths. I greatly look forward to building the group into a strong and successful member of the Quarto family."
Graham added: "In the digital age, range is no longer necessarily an advantage . . . [Union Books] will be a very niche operation that has a strong branding element to it. The accent will be on serious literary writing, with the focus initially on non-fiction." He added that no titles had as yet been signed up.
Aurum chairman and c.e.o. Laurence Orbach said: "David will bring new vigour and enthusiasm to Aurum. It has always been Quarto's ambition to encourage the growth of our UK trade publishing presence, and we expect David's background and experience to equip him well for the task."
Graham will begin his new role tomorrow [15th February].
Aurum was acquired by the Quarto Group in the summer of 2004. Its trade publishing division also includes imprints Jacqui Small and Apple Press.
