Daunt Books Publishing has acquired a collection of short stories by Laura van den Berg.
Publisher Laura Macaulay and editor Karen Maine bought British Commonwealth rights to The Isle of Youth from Devon Mazzone at Farrar, Straus and Giroux in the US.
Described as an “elegant and deliciously compelling collection”, the stories explore the lives of women mired in secrecy and deception. Tales include that of a newlywed caught in an inscrutable marriage, to private eyes working a baffling case in South Florida, to a teenager who assists her magician mother and steals from the audience.
Maine said: “Laura is an immensely talented writer – and each story in this collection is by turns funny, unexpected and sincere. She understands the subtle ways relationships are formed and altered, and the surprising ways in which the familiar can suddenly reveal its darker contours. All that, and she’s equally capable of capturing your attention with just one sentence.”
Daunt Books launched its publishing imprint in 2010 with a list of classic reissues and is now acquiring original fiction and non-fiction for its list.
