Gaming memoir Fuck Yeah, Video Games by Daniel Hardcastle has set a new record on crowdfunding publisher Unbound's website - reaching 100% of its funding target within just 15 minutes.
The project, described by Hardcastle (aka Dan NerdCubed) as "a love letter" to video games, is currently 965% funded, having amassed almost 4,500 backers since launching at 3.41pm yesterday (5th June).
According to Hardcastle's crowdfunding page, in the book he will celebrate the "brilliance" of video games "in a warm and whimsical manner". Each chapter will be dedicated to a different videogame of the last 30 years, with examples including "God of War" and "Animal Crossing", while filled with in-jokes, anecdotes and "more swear words than that YouTube video with the bootleg fireworks". The text will meanwhile be complemented by extensive artwork from the illustrator Rebecca Maughan.
"We are delighted to welcome Daniel into the Unbound family," commented John Mitchinson, publisher at Unbound. "We are the perfect platform for someone like Daniel as we are able to connect directly to his audience, but this is also just a brilliantly funny book that is as much about growing up as it is about video games. I know it will appeal well beyond his loyal fanbase."
Hardcastle started making videos on YouTube in 2011, after making web-comics based around the game Minecraft. He now has 2.6m subscribers to his main channel and has produced over 3,700 videos for the platform. He was also a Golden Joystick Award Nominee due to his work in the games industry.
The acquisition follows news Unbound made four editors redundant in April as part of a "strategic reorganisation", despite expanding its editorial team months before.
