Cumberbatch, Gaiman and Cave in star-studded Canongate event

Gillian Anderson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Nick Cave, Neil Gaiman and Thandie Newton will be among the famous names reading letters as part of a series of live events for Canongate.

The Live Letters evenings, inspired by the recent publication of Simon Garfield’s To the Letter and Shaun Usher’s Letters of Note (co-published with Unbound), will raise money for charity The Reading Agency.

The first event night, held on 10th December at the Tabernacle in London, with its £25 tickets already sold out, will feature all the above performers and writers, as well as Matt Berry, Kerry Fox, DBC Pierre, James Rhodes, Bruce Robinson, Peter Serafinowicz and Juliet Stevenson.

Jamie Byng, publisher at Canongate said: “Bringing words alive is something that great performers do in the most exhilarating of ways and through our Letters Live series of events we hope to celebrate letters in all their glory.” He added: "It is also fitting to be raising money through these events for such an important charity as The Reading Agency, an organisation that truly appreciates how books and reading enrich people’s lives.”

A similarly structured night has been planned for 27th March 2014. This will be followed by several more nationwide events across the year, details of which  will be announced in January 2014.
