Liz Cross promoted to managing director at David Fickling Books

Liz Cross has been promoted to the new dual role of publishing director and managing director at David Fickling Books (DFB).

Cross began her publishing career as assistant to David Fickling at Scholastic, before joining Walker Books and then returning to Scholastic, where she worked up the editorial ladder to become head of fiction. Cross was then head of children’s publishing at OUP from 2000, a role she held for nearly 20 years. She joined David Fickling as publishing director in 2019.

Tom Fickling is stepping back into a strategic role across both David Fickling Books and The Phoenix, DFB’s sister company, which publishes the weekly children’s comic of the same name. Fickling will remain part of the senior management team at DFB, and continue in his dual role of m.d. and editor of The Phoenix.

Cross said: “Working at DFB is such a joy – it’s a company where everything is rooted in a genuine passion for publishing excellence. I am really excited about our plans for the future, and am looking forward to continuing to work with David, Tom, the rest of the brilliant DFB team, and of course our amazing authors and illustrators, to keep publishing wonderful books, and to keep this unique and very special company going from strength to strength.”

Tom Fickling commented: “We are delighted to announce that we are appointing Liz to a new dual role of publishing director and managing director. I think this is the perfect time for Liz to officially take the reins of the company. She has already made such a fantastic difference to everything we do and she is definitely the right person to lead DFB into the future.”

David Fickling added: “Liz Cross’ appointment is an absolute delight for DFB, a box of delights in fact, and a joy for me personally. Not many people combine the startlingly perceptive editorial qualities and deep and broad commercial publishing experience that Liz does. I really can’t think of anybody better professionally and personally to take on this dual role at DFB. She is an editor to her fingertips. Get ready readers! Here comes DFB!”
