Constable & Robinson has acquired two novels by debut author Tom Winter, with the publisher pitching the first title as reminiscent of Alan Bennett and Roddy Doyle.
Commissioning editor Victoria Hughes-Williams bought UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, in debut novel, Lost and Found, and one other title, from Juliet Mushens at PFD, on behalf of Tricia Davey of Davey Literary & Media. C&R plans to publish Lost and Found as a hardback in 2013.
The book is set in south London and follows unhappily married Carol, and Albert, a widowed postman approaching retirement age. When Albert receives letters that Carol has written about her life, which she never intended anyone to read, the pair have a profound effect on each other's lives.
Hughes-Williams said: "I was completely drawn in by Tom's elegant writing and brilliant sense of humour. Lost and Found is an intensely moving tale of two wonderfully drawn characters; I couldn't help but get lost in their story. Tom is bursting with ideas for his next novel and the whole team is thrilled to be welcoming him to C&R."
