New Cross library remained closed on its scheduled final day of opening, Saturday 28th May, because of council fears that protestors would occupy the building.
A council notice fixed to the shutters told library users: "We considered the potential for damage to books and property and decided to close the library one day earlier", saying: "If you wish to return your books, please take them to any other Lewisham library."
The note added: "The council is now working with local organisations to make community library services available in New Cross as soon as possible."
But angry residents posted their own responses, commenting: "Do you want me to study in McDonalds?" and "You're the vandals, not us."
