Joe Cottington has been promoted to editorial director at Octopus.
Cottington, previously senior commissioning editor, has been with Octopus for six years, during which time he is credited in building a strong, commercial and profitable list, focusing primarily on pop culture, brands and, increasingly, music titles. Among his successes are Sip, with gin brand Sipsmith (the UK’s bestselling drinks title of 2019); Elton John and Bowie, both with Terry O’Neill; and Stoned by Jo Wood.
Going forwards Cottington will be focusing increasingly on the music list, which sees him work with partners from the Sex Pistols to Classic FM. He will be publishing both illustrated and narrative books on subjects across the musical spectrum, from Bowie to Britpop, pop to post-punk.
Denise Bates, Octopus Group publishing director, said: "Joe combines sharp commercial insight and great taste and it is a joy watching his internationally successful list go from strength to strength.
Cottington said: "I’m thrilled to be stepping up at Octopus, where I’ve so enjoyed building a varied list with such fantastic brands and authors. My own love of music means I’m especially excited to be taking our strong history of music publishing to ambitious new heights."
