Jonathan Littell's Holocaust novel, The Kindly Ones, went on sale in the US this week, but critics already have drawn fiercely partisan battle lines, notes the Wall Street Journal.

Former Publishers Weekly editor Sara Nelson writes: "Is this debut novel—which tells the story of the Holocaust from the point of view of an eloquent but heavily unsympathetic SS officer—searingly honest or just plain perverse? Uncommonly brave or totally craven? Work of literature or
publishing stunt? . . . It's hard to believe the folks at HarperCollins, which published the book, aren't licking their lips in anticipation."
