The Quarto Group has launched a new consumer-facing website to promote its global publishing programme, and will start selling direct to customers in the UK this autumn.
The site will showcase and make available titles published by Quarto Publishing UK, and Quarto Publishing Group USA, and marks a continuation of Quarto's strategy to strengthen its brand. In 2013 Quarto rebranded its UK publishing business Aurum Publishing Group as Quarto Publishing Group UK, with c.e.o. Marcus Leaver describing the move as a "consumer-led approach". Earlier this year Quarto rolled out a create-your-own cook-book website "This is Your Cookbook".
The new website, QuartoKnows.com, is now live, with direct to consumer sales launching from 31st August in the US and 30th September in the UK. The site currently includes links to retailers, including Amazon and Waterstones, from which to buy titles.
QuartoKnows.com presents books in 10 subject areas, each branded with a different icon. The areas are Quarto Cooks, Quarto Homes, Quarto Drives, Quarto Kids, Quarto Lives (health & MBS), Quarto Plays (sport & games), Quarto Creates (art, craft & design), Quarto Thinks (culture), Quarto Explores (history, travel, science) and Quarto Gifts. Each section contains curated book recommendations and blogs with content drawn from the books featured.
Leaver said: "What better way could there be to enable consumers to discover more books than to present them clearly in response to their interest and searches? We want to be able to connect our books and their authors directly with consumers in a way that is responsive to what they're searching for. We know that what draws people to our books is that they provide critical and dependable information about the subjects they're passionate about."
“With the enormous breadth of subjects about which we have real expertise, deep content reservoirs, and fantastic communities around our authors, it is clear that Quarto really does know. We're excited at the opportunity this gives us to engage consumers and develop deeper and lasting relationships and provide more meaning to the Quarto brand.”
Quarto Publishing UK comprises five imprints: Aurum Press, Frances Lincoln Publishers, Frances Lincoln Children's Books, Jacqui Small and Wide Eyed Editions. The US publishing business includes 15 imprints. The consumer website excludes those titles that are part of Quarto's co-edition business.
Earlier his year Leaver said the company’s reorganisation had “started to deliver”, with profits growing in 2014. For the year ending 31st December 2014, profit was up 10% to $15.4m (£10.4m) compared to the year before. Quarto Publishing Group UK revenures increased 3.3% to $21.5m (£14.6m).
