The future of two long-lived campus bookshops serving the universities of Leicester and Northampton are in doubt as their lease expires.
The University of Leicester has leased space at the University of Northampton to operate two shops, Park Campus Bookshop and Avenue Campus Bookshop, one 25 years old and the other established 40 years ago.
But in a statement, the University of Leicester told The Bookseller: “The lease expires this summer and the University of Leicester is currently in consultation with the University of Northampton over their future plans for bookshop provision. Leicester will discuss the future of the two full-time staff and four part-time staff at Northampton as part of the consultation process.”
Colin Marshall, who manages the bookshops, said he was “sad” about the developments and was waiting to see what would be done with the space. He said: “It is a shame the bookshops are closing, especially because there are staff affected, and most of them have worked there for an awful long time. But we shall wait and see what is done with the space.”
