Little, Brown has bought the rights to a "disturbing and compelling" novel by Tom Darling. Abacus editorial director Jenny Parrott bought UK and Commonwealth (excluding Canada) rights from Kerry Glencorse of Susanna Lea Associates.
Summer will be published in Spring 2012. The title is described by the publisher as being "disturbing and compelling" and tells of two children who are sent to live with their grandfather after the death of their parents. The publisher said the novel is "a deeply atmospheric exploration of grief, loss, death and regeneration".
Parrott said: "Tom Darling is the first homegrown novelist to have excited me in months, and I’m really pleased to be publishing him. His writing seems to have it all – a great way of telling a story, compelling characterisation, strong dialogue, and a real sense of narrative pace – and so Tom is a wonderful find."
