Sandstone Press has acquired a comic literary novel about divorce, mortality and badgers by Rob Palk.
The publisher holds world rights to Animal Lovers, which follows a man called Stuart as his wife becomes passionately involved in protesing the badger-cull, falls for a fellow activist, and then leaves him to join the cause. Stuart refuses to admit their marriage is over, feigning an interest in badgers and following her to the woods to win her back. As new relationships form, secrets bubble to the surface- including some which might have been best left hidden.
Palk wrote his first book while recovering from a nearly-fatal illness and the collapse of his marriage.
Moira Forsyth, editorial director at Sandstone Press, said: "We’re delighted to be publishing this funny and touching debut novel. It’s a highly entertaining take on love, badgers and the threat of serious illness from a writer with the poten al to rival Nick Hornby with his well-meaning but hapless protagonist, and his incisive depic on of contemporary life."
Sandstone will publish Animal Lovers in February 2018.
