Hillary Rodham Clinton’s What Happened has sold 300,000 copies across all formats in its first week, according to publisher Simon & Schuster, claiming the US number one chart spot.
Print sales via BookScan came in at 167,273 copies in its first week on sale in the US, knocking J D Robb’s Secrets in Death off the top spot. It is the biggest first-week sales for hardback non-fiction title since 2012.
The publisher has also claimed the audio download edition has recorded the best week of sales in its history, and the e-book has achieved the best week for a non-fiction titles for the company since Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs in 2011.
In the UK the title shot straight into the Hardback Non-Fiction top three, selling 6,410 copies.
Meanwhile, the re-released edition of Clinton’s picture book It Takes a Village also charted in the US top 100, hitting 91st place and selling 5,478 copies.
Carolyn Reidy, president & chief executive of Simon & Schuster said: “The remarkable response to What Happened indicates that, notwithstanding all that has been written and discussed over the last year, there is clearly an overwhelming desire among readers to learn about and experience, from Hillary Clinton’s singular perspective, the historic events of the 2016 election. In its candour and immediacy, What Happened is satisfying that demand.”
The publisher added that the title had already gone back to press three times, with 800,000 copies currently in print.
