Puffin’s Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy by Lynley Dodd, first published 20 years ago, has been selected as one of this year’s free Booktime books.
Booktrust and Pearson, which jointly run the scheme, will send 1.5 million books to 730,000 children aged 4-5 in England and Wales.
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy was published in 1983 by Penguin Books New Zealand and is the first in a series of twelve titles. Hairy Maclary is a fictional dog of undetermined breed who undertakes various adventures with his friends Schnitzel von Krumm the dachshund, Bottomley Potts the dalmatian and Muffin McClay the Old English Sheepdog.
Children in England will also receive Go to Bed by Emma Lynch (Pearson), which explores a variety of beds, nests and homes around the world. Children in Wales will be sent a Welsh language title that will be chosen this summer.
Peter Hughes, director of corporate responsibility at Pearson, said: “Reading is fundamental to learning and in today's modern world, to living. [We] hope that this gift will help unlock a wonderful world of stories.”
The Booktime programme was launched in 2006.
