Comparative reports showing how library authorities compare across the country will be available from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) in December.
Culture minister Ed Vaizey is to commission CIPFA, which collates annual library statistics, to produce detailed reports for services across England.
The comparative reports are intended to enable the comparison of library services with similar authorities across the country to benchmark how well they are performing as an organisation and where they could improve.
Vaizey said: "I have decided to fund reports for all library authorities in England for the year 2011-12, and to make those reports publicly available in December this year. This new initiative will give local authorities—and local residents—the tools to see how their service measures up. It will help them and the public ask well-informed questions about their libraries—and also to make well-informed suggestions for improvement.”
Julian Mund, CIPFA's product development director, said: “Our popular benchmarking reports cover a wide range of services, allowing authorities to see how they stack up against their peers."
