The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals has added to the calls for culture secretary Andy Burnham to review Wirral council's plans to close nearly half its public libraries. CILIP council has now formally asked Burnham to intervene.
The move adds to the campaign against the closures already being waged by local residents and a group of high-profile authors including Alan Gibbons and Beverley Naidoo.
The closure plans are set to go to Wirral's full council meeting for final approval later this month, with opponents pointing out that Burnham has a requirement under the 1964 Public Libraries and Museums Act to superintend local government to ensure councils provide a "comprehensive and efficient" public library service.
