China has become the second largest e-book market in the world although its increasing popularity is leading to problems including lack of standards and protection of intellectual property rights.
The India Times reports last year, e-book sales reached 3.82m in China and accounted for more than 20% of the world's total in the first half of this year.
However, increasing problems has led China's General Administration of Press and Publication (Gapp) to issue guidelines. Issues include weak protection of intellectual property rights, lack of industry wide standards and a dearth of homegrown digital market.
The Gapp said it plans to establish a pool of reading material for e-books, nuturing big name e-book brands and improving the transformation process of titles into digital formats. It also plans to establish national e-book standards.
