Chatto & Windus has won an eight-publisher auction for a book which will give readers “the scientifically proven tools they need to design a life they love”.
Deputy publishing director Becky Hardie acquired UK and Commonwealth rights for Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, described as former pioneering Silicon Valley and Apple innovators, from Chandler Crawford on behalf of Douglas Abrams at the Chandler Crawford Agency.
Designing Your Life, which was pre-empted for a seven-figure sum by Knopf/Vintage in the US, is based on Burnett and Evans’ Designing Your Life course at Stanford University in the US, in which they apply the tools from design thinking – which is transforming technology and business - to “empower individuals to transform their lives and career paths”.
“Challenging the traditional career approach in a fresh and accessible way, the book will enable readers to tackle the misconceptions and negative beliefs that get in the way of creating a successful career and a satisfying life,” Chatto & Windus said.
Hardie said: “This proposal knocked our socks off. Like all truly good ideas, its simplicity is perfect. The whole idea of building your life like a designer rather than solving it like an engineer is clever, neat and instantly appealing.
“I can’t wait to bring Bill and Dave, with their incredible energy, design credentials and track record with students, to people in the UK.”
Designing Your Life will be published in spring 2016.
