Chatto & Windus has acquired Boxer Handsome, a debut novel by Anna Whitwham about boxer boys and their girls set in the East End of London.
Editor Parisa Ebrahimi acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in a deal made with Simon Trewin at William Morris Endeavour, and will publish in early 2014.
Ebrahimi said: "Boxer Handsome is about fighting and feuding, bruises and bad blood, with a battered love story at its heart. But it's also an unsung hymn to tribal boxing history and to contemporary England. Anna's prose is suitably tough and un-embossed, and it's exciting to welcome such a fresh voice to the Chatto list."
Whitwham is currently completing her creative writing PhD with the Poet Laureate Andrew Motion at Royal Holloway, where she also lectures.
