Charlie tops’s Dahl chart

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tops the list of Roald Dahl’s biggest sellers via over the past five years, the internet retailer revealed today (12th September).

Amazon released a list of Dahl’s top 10 most popular books between September 2011 and September 2016, according to print and Kindle sales combined, to mark the centenary of his birth.

After Charlie..., the next most popular book is The BFG, followed by George’s Marvellous Medicine. Matilda is next in fourth place and James and the Giant Peach is fifth. Amazon did not reveal exactly how many copies of each book it has sold but said Dahl was one of the top five best-selling Children’s authors on over the last year.

The Amazon chart differs from Nielsen BookScan, which shows Matilda is the most popular book in UK bookshops. The Twits is second and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is third, with The BFG and the World Book Day title The Great Mouse Plot in fourth and fifth, according to Nielsen.

George’s Marvellous Medicine and James and the Giant Peach only make eighth and tenth respectively.

Dan Mucha, books director for, said: “Having grown up with Roald Dahl’s books and seeing my children read them today, I understand first-hand the joy and enduring quality of his stories.  The centenary of his birth marks a big moment in the literary calendar.”

To mark the centenary, Amazon will launch a dedicated Roald Dahl shop page, featuring a new Quentin Blake illustration, on 13th September.

The shop will sell books, DVDs, clothing, kitchenware and toys, said Mucha.
