Edinburgh-based indie publisher Charco Press, which specialises in contemporary Latin American literature in translation, has unveiled its 2021 list with a record seven titles, four of which will be coming out in the UK and in the US simultaneously.
The line-up includes Charco’s first Cuban author, Karla Suárez, whose Havana Year Zero, translated by Christina MacSweeney, is released on 23rd February.
Also on the list is Uruguayan poet and Cervantes Prize-winner Ida Vitale's Byobu, translated by Sean Manning.
Charco has also snapped up Elena Knows, a novel by the so-called “Hitchcock of the River Plate” Claudia Piñeiro. Translated by Frances Riddle, it is released on 13th July 2021. The list also features A Perfect Cemetery, a collection of short stories by Argentinean author Federico Falco, translated by Jennifer Croft and released on 6th April.
Director and publishing editor Carolina Orloff said: “This is going to be an explosive year for Charco and for Latin American literature. We are really proud and excited for everything to come in 2021, from authors not published in English before, to voices that have influenced generations.”
Throughout lockdown the publisher has introduced a series of virtual events including taking part in Borderless Book Club, a collective virtual book group with several other indie presses.
It also saw one of its titles, The Adventures of China Iron by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, shortlisted for the International Booker Prize. In addition, it continues to introduce all its backlist titles to North America through sales and distribution firm Consortium.
Director Sam McDowell explained: “While 2020 has certainly presented its challenges, the solidarity from other presses and the support from our readers and bookshops has kept us going, both in terms of finances and morale.”
