Carlton is publishing two major illustrated works this summer to coincide with the commemorations for the Battle of Britain, which took place 70 years ago.
The Battle of Britain Experience by historian Richard Overy is being published in association with the Royal Air Force, and looks at the whole battle, from the machines used, strategies employed and accounts of all the action on land and in the air.
Carlton has been given access to RAF museums and archives to create facsimile documents including Churchill’s notes for his famous “never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few” speech, the order and plans for Germany’s invasion of Great Britain, known as Operation “Sealion” and log books of pilots who flew in the battle.
Meanwhile, Hurricane: The Last Witnesses by Brian Milton tells the stories of the 17 remaining pilots who flew the aircraft during the Second World War.
Milton has brought together a series of personal experiences from these “last witnesses” to tell the story of what it was like to fly and fight in the iconic aircraft, including over the white cliffs of Dover during the Battle of Britain, the Battle of France, the defence of Malta, the North African desert, the Arctic wastes and the Far East. Both books will be published as hardbacks on 10th July priced £30 and £18.99 respectively.
Carlton head of publicity Nicole Ettinger said: “Carlton is proud to be publishing two very special titles to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Hurricane provides first-hand accounts from some of the few living Second World War veterans, most of whom are now in their nineties. The clarity and vividness with which they recall their experiences is deeply moving, not to mention inspirational.”
