Middle East specialist publisher Saqi Books has appointed Cara Thompson in the newly created role of publicity and marketing manager.
Thompson previously worked for independent performing arts publisher Oberon Books, which Bloomsbury acquired in January 2020. She led marketing and publicity campaigns across trade and academic titles, as well as curating new brand-building initiatives, including a partnership with the Royal Court Theatre.
Thompson will take up the new role full time from 22nd March, to manage campaigns for titles across imprints Saqi and The Westbourne Press, including Dangerous Ideas: A Brief History of Censorship in the West from the Ancients to Fake News, a history of censorship and free speech throughout the ages from Eric Berkowitz, author of Sex and Punishment; and C+nto, a poetry collection exploring underground lesbian culture by award-winning poet Joelle Taylor.
Thompson will join the existing team of sales manager Ashley Biles and senior editor and rights manager Elizabeth Briggs, headed by publisher Lynn Gaspard.
Thompson commented: "I am thrilled to be joining Saqi Books - a publishing house uniquely skilled in bringing minority voices to the fore, and exploring the most compelling issues of our times through its list of exceptional authors; both matters which I am extremely passionate about. I am inspired by the incredible knowledge, energy and dedication of everyone at Saqi Books, and couldn’t be more excited to become part of this fantastic team."
Gaspard added: "As we begin to move out of lockdown, we are very much looking forward to the year ahead. It is more important now than ever before for indie publishers to fly the flag, publishing works that champion the voices, places and people who are neglected elsewhere. I couldn’t be happier that Cara, whose experience, creativity and enthusiasm has so impressed us, is joining this team. This year is going to be a hugely exciting year for Saqi."
