Cape buys new novels from Joe Stretch

Jonathan Cape has acquired the new novel by author Joe Stretch, with his previous two novels Friction and Wildlife published as Vintage Originals.

Senior editor Beth Coates bought UK and Commonwealth rights to The Adult from Cathryn Summerhayes at WME, and plans to publish in August 2012.

The book is billed as a "wonderfully funny and dark coming-of-age story" about a family of performers, and follows Jim Albright as he moves into adulthood.

Coates said: "This novel made me cry, and cry with laughter. It's pitch-perfect on the insecurities and obsessions of adolescence, and on the insanity of our celebrity-obsessed world. And I can't wait to see what readers make of a novel that charts a sexual journey from an inflatable dolphin to Lolo Ferrari."
