Canongate Books has acquired Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets and Advice for Living Your Best Life by comedian, actor and writer Ali Wong.
Senior commissioning editor Hannah Knowles acquired UK rights to the debut from Rachel Kind, executive director of foreign rights at Random House US. Canongate will publish Dear Girls in hardback (RRP £14.99) on 17th October 2019.
Wong, an American actress, was launched on to the comedy scene with her show on Netflix, “Baby Cobra”, which she performed while heavily pregnant with her first daughter. This was followed by a second stand-up special, “Hard-Knock Wife”, and feature film “Always Be My Maybe”, which confirmed her status as a major comedic star.
“In Wong’s standup, she has told the world her highly unfiltered thoughts on marriage, sex, Asian culture, and working women,” Canongate said. “Her sharp insights and humour are even more personal in Dear Girls. She shares the wisdom she's learned from a life in comedy and reveals stories from her life off stage, not limited to: her experiences reconnecting with her Vietnamese roots, tales of being a wild child growing up in San Francisco, and parenting war stories.”
The book is structured as letters to her two daughters and is described as “heartfelt and hilarious, covering everything they may need to know in life, including the unpleasant details of dating, how to be a working mom in a male-dominated profession, and of course how she trapped their dad”.
Knowles said: “Dear Girls is as blisteringly funny and ferocious as Ali Wong’s stand-up, and a bracing blast of fresh air.”
