Canongate is to publish Matt Haig's new children's book, A Mouse Called Miika.
Publishing director Francis Bickmore acquired world rights, including audio and e-book, to the story from Clare Conville at C&W. Chris Mould will illustrate in a deal agreed with Penny Holroyde at Holroyde Cartey.
A Mouse Called Miika will be a spin-off book from Haig’s A Boy Called Christmas series, which has been adapted for cinema and is expected to be released by Studiocanal next year.
Bickmore said: "Haig’s Christmas series is fast achieving Christmas classic status, with 750,000 books sold worldwide, and a film that looks set to take things to a whole new level. [The mouse character] Miika was always a favourite with readers and everyone at Canongate is thrilled that Matt’s giving him a standalone adventure of his own. We’re chasing our tails with excitement that the Haig-Mould-Canongate team is back on the road."
Haig has sold nearly 1.5 million books for £9.6m and was the bestselling author published by an independent publisher of the year, accounting for 21% of Canongate's TCM takings.
He said:"Miika is a character I wanted to explore in more depth, having featured him in A Boy Called Christmas. I have such fun writing about him, so it is great to give him the space to explore a rather complicated, mischievous, rodent who may or may not be as selfish as he first appears. A pleasure to be reuniting with Chris Mould again too."
Canongate has already sold US rights to Knopf Books for Young Readers and Canadian rights to HarperCollins Canada. The book will be published in hardback in September 2021.
