Canongate has acquired world rights in Creating Freedom, a book by artist, writer and documentary maker Raoul Martinez.
The book, on the nature of freedom, is part of a book and three-part film project. The narrative non-fiction book is based on the films which contain interviews with thinkers and activists including Noam Chomsky, Steven Pinker, Daniel Dennett and Howard Zinn. The first film in the series, "The Lottery of Birth", premiered at the London Raindance Festival last year and which has since won the Artivist Spirit Award.
Senior editor Jenny Lord and publisher Jamie Byng signed the deal directly with the author, with plans to publish in June 2014. Dutch rights were pre-empted by Atlas-Contact, while Hoffman & Campe won German rights at auction, and an auction is underway in Canada.
Lord said: “Creating Freedom promises to be a timely look at a vital subject; something which we often take for granted–our freedom. And it’s fantastic to see excitement building for the project around the world.”
