Canongate acquires non-fiction from Grenville

Canongate has signed a new work of non-fiction from Man Booker Prize-shortlisted and Orange Prize-winning author Kate Grenville.

Editorial director of fiction Louisa Joyner signed UK rights in One Life from Michael Heyward at Text Publishing.

The book tells the story of Grenville's mother Nance Russell, whose life spanned a century of change. Drawing on fragments go her own memoirs, Grenville looks back at Nance's life as a mother and businesswoman.

Grenville said: "What an extraordinary journey it was to write this book – it gave me the chance to get to know my mother as a woman, as well as a parent.  She was a remarkable woman – my only regret is that she's no longer here to read it.”

Grenville’s novel The Secret River (Canongate) was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Miles Franklin Literary Award, and received the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. The Idea of Perfection (Picador) won the Orange Prize.
