Buster Books, the children’s imprint of independent publisher Michael O’Mara Books, is marking Earth Day (22nd April) this year, by donating £50,000 to the Green Match Fund campaign for environmental charities.
Meanwhile the imprint is also running an art competition for schools, in partnership with Young People’s Trust for the Environment, inviting children across the UK to create posters based on Guardians of the Planet: How To Be An Eco-Hero by Clive Gifford and illustrated by Jonathan Woodward.
The Buster Books title includes facts, tips and creative activities to encourage children to learn about the environment and demonstrate what they can do to help, such as becoming a "keeper of the coast".
The winner's prize is an art workshop with Woodward for a class or year group, where pupils will learn about the environment, highlighting the problem of plastic in the ocean in particular. There are also 10 runner-ups who will win a green book bundle each. The competition will be judged by CBBC presenter Naomi Wilkinson.
Meanwhile there will also be a two-week book tour for Guardians of the Planet, with copies sent to influencers and bloggers. The imprint is also working with the Reading Agency, which is doing a “read and review” Chatterbooks campaign for the book with 10 schools across the UK, and CILIP, who ran a giveaway for librarians in the Youth Libraries Group newsletter.
Buster Books is also offering 10% off a range of titles exploring sustainability and the planet with Hive, including You Can Save the Planet, The Green Rebel Activity Book, and The Big Green Activity Book.
Lesley O’Mara, m.d. of Michael O’Mara Books, said: “We’ve made big plans to celebrate Earth Day this year. We are committed to supporting environmental charities and want to help inform young people that action is needed to slow climate change and show them the ways that they can make an impact.”
