The British Book Awards 2020: one week left to submit entries

There is one week left to submit entries to the British Book Awards 2020. The deadline for submissions, which can be made at thebookseller.com/british-book-awards, is Friday 7th February at 6 p.m.

This year's British Book Awards, (a.k.a. the Nibbies) will present awards for Publisher of the Year, Independent Bookshop, Author, and Book of the Year among a range of prizes to be handed out on the 18th May at The JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel by host Lauren Laverne. Last year’s winners included Sally Rooney, who picked up the Book of the Year and Fiction award, Michelle Obama, Judith Kerr, Lee Child and David Walliams. Among trade winners were Penguin General, W H Smith Travel, Golden Hare Books, Faber, and literary agent Cathryn Summerhayes.

This year will also see the Small Press of the Year, for publishers with annual sales of less than £2m, awarded on the night for the first time, after last year being announced at the London Book Fair. The shortlist will be comprised of nine regional winners, representing the best of independent publishing across the English regions, and countries Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The winner of the Small Press award will also go on to compete against fellow indie publishers for the Independent Publisher of the Year award at May’s event.

The small press prize will be sponsored for a second year by printer CPI Books. Tanya Dunbar, CPI books managing director, said: "CPI is delighted to sponsor the ‘Small Press Award’ for the second year running. There is so much passion and dedication flowing through these smaller publishers, who time and time again find a gem of an author and make a wonderful and creative job of publishing their work. It is a sector we are proud to be associated with."
