Andrea Kirkby and Kate Cantrell have been named the winners of the The Bradt and Independent on Sunday Travel Writing Competition. The awards were announced at Stanfords bookshop in London on 14th July.
Kirkby's entry The Night Kitchens of Zeida won the Published Writers category and she was awarded a holiday for two in Colombia. Kirkby's winning story will also be published in The Independent on Sunday.
Cantrell won the Unpublished Writers category for her entry, entitled Colours. She flew over from Australia to attend the awards ceremony and wins a place on a travel-writing course in Spain.
Hilary Bradt, chairman of Bradt said: "The quality of the writing this year surpassed all previous years making the task of choosing the short-listed six finalists extremely difficult."
The final winners were chosen by journalist and travel writer, Matthew Parris.
The competition was open to all unpublished and published writers aged over 18. The theme of the entry was 'Destination Unknown'. Other writers in the shortlist included published writer, Martin Alexander and unpublished writers Sally Blake, Sophie Coulombeau and Jo Forel.
