Borders launches e-books store

<p>Borders UK has launched an e-book store on its website and has teamed up with wholesaler Gardners to make more than 45,000 titles available in ePub and Adobe PDF format. The retailer has also revamped its website, giving it what it describes as a &quot;clearer, brighter feel&quot;.</p><p>Titles by, among others, Henning Mankell, Terry Pratchett and Lee Child have been made available with prices beginning at &pound;6.99. The e-books are being made available via Gardners Digital Warehouse. The site went live at the end of last week.</p><p>Borders UK was the first bookseller to market a dedicated e-reader, the Iliad, a year ago, and is expected to unveil a new cheaper device in it stores shortly. This is the bookseller&#39;s first foray into actual e-books. </p><p>Julie Howkins, head of e-commerce at Borders UK, said: &quot;We&#39;re delighted to be able to offer our customers the ability to buy eBooks via our website. The bias is still very much towards academic titles but we hope that the number of trade titles will increase quickly when publishers have another route to market.&quot;<br /><br />Bob Jackson, commercial director at Gardners, said: &quot;We are delighted to be working with Borders UK and their developers to create a new, fresh, retail site with strong brand recognition which will appeal to Borders customers.&quot; He added: &quot;With over 45,000 titles available immediately, and UK publishers increasingly creating digital books alongside their physical books throughout 2009, the range will grow significantly in coming months&quot;</p>
