Borders to close Books Etc Staines

Borders has confirmed that it is in the process of closing its Books Etc store in Staines' Two Rivers Centre. The company said it would close the branch "with regret" at the beginning of October.

Philip Downer, chief executive of Borders UK, said the company was selling the leasehold on the premises, and the staff were entering a consultation process. He added: "Over the next few weeks, the store will move into close-down sale and physical strip-out; the residual stock will be recycled into other branches or returned as appropriate."

He added: "The operations and HR departments are working closely with the store to support our staff, and we very much hope that we will be able to offer continuity of employment for those who seek it. I should like to thank everybody who has contributed to their trading, past and present."

The company declined to specify how many jobs would be affected.

Waterstone's acquired eight Books Etc stores in London from Borders UK, in August last year. There are now 9 "small stores", including Books Etc and Borders Express, left in the group. Downer and finance director Mark Little led a buyout of the business, backed by Valco Capital Partners, in July.
