Waterstone's, Foyles and British Bookshops have been accused of having three of the slowest responding websites, according to a survey by automated testing company Sitemorse.
The Retail Bulletin reports the company surveyed 500 retailers' websites, measuring its first 125 pages on various performance criteria. An average of the 10 slowest response times was taken with the three booksellers ranking at the bottom. Waterstone's was the worst performer, averaging 69.8 seconds, Foyles at 61.4 and British Bookshops and Stationers at 59.1 seconds.
Lawrence Shaw, chief executive of Sitemorse, said: "There continues to be a focus on increasing conversion rates and retailers keep adding new things to their websites like analytics but if customers are hitting poor performing pages then they will not hand around."
Other well known retailers rated poorly including HMV, Argos, Halfords and Lastminute.com. The best performing retailers were Scats Countrystores and B&Q.
