The Bookseller launches search for 2020 Rising Stars

The Bookseller is announcing the call for entries for the 2020 Rising Stars—the tenth edition of its annual celebration of the British and Irish book industry’s up-and-comers. The initiative, backed by the Frankfurt Book Fair, will publish on the 3rd July.

Each year, the Rising Stars salutes around 40 book trade professionals who are tipped as future leaders of the trade. The lists are a mixture of those relatively early in their careers and long-serving professionals who have changed tack to help revitalise the industry.

Recent honorees include Ailah Ahmed (class of 2017), promoted last autumn to publishing director at Little, Brown; Usborne Fiction editorial director Rebecca Hill ('18), the 2019 winner of the British Book Award for Editor of the Year; Waterstones children's buyer Florentyna Martin ('17); and agent Nelle Andrew ('17), who moved this month from PFD to the Rachel Mills Literary agency, where she joined two other Rising Stars, Rachel Mills ('11) and Alexandra Cliff ('14).

A member of the 2020 class will be named the "Shooting Star", a nominee the judges believe deserves slightly greater recognition. The Shooting Star will be awarded with a package from FBF (should this year's fair go ahead), which includes a free trip to FBF 2020, a five-day pass to the fair and a ticket to the Frankfurt Conference on the Thursday, invitations to networking receptions and introductions to industry insiders. The last two Shooting Stars have come from Pan Macmillan: Laura Ricchetti, head of International sales, Europe and the Middle East ('19) and Picador editorial director Sophie Jonathan ('18).

Tom Tivnan, The Bookseller managing editor and founder of the Rising Stars, said: "With the challenges and difficulties that lie ahead because of coronavirus, it is perhaps more vital now than ever to recognise those innovators and the leaders of tomorrow  in the trade who will help us through the crisis."

To nominate a colleague, or yourself, send a testimonial outlining their/your accomplishments to tom.tivnan@thebookseller.com. Entries must be received by 15th May.
