Booker picks international contenders

Eighteen authors from 13 countries make up a list of contenders for the first ever Man Booker International.

Representing the UK are Ian McEwan and Muriel Spark, published by Random House and Penguin respectively. Other authors on the list writing in English are Philip Roth, Margaret Atwood, Doris Lessing, John Updike, Saul Bellow and Cynthia Ozick.

McEwan and Atwood are the only previous Man Booker Prize winners on the list, which also includes five recipients of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
