The Book Trade Charity is aiming to raise £25,000 in additional funding from a week of events to be held from 7th June to 11th June. The 'Action Week' replaces its previous main event, the Walkies.
Events slated for the week include a tennis tournament, a music evening, author hosted dinners, and coffee mornings. But chairman Jo Henry said that all ideas would be welcomed. She said: "What we'd really like to encourage is for you to do is anything big or small -- from shaving beards to baking cakes." Henry said events could also take place outside the nominated week.
At a drinks reception to launch the week, held at Hachette last night (23rd February) Henry said the charity was facing increased demand for its services and its grants. "Applications to us have been rising and rising. There are some really terrible stories out there."
Those attending the reception included Clare Harington, Hachette's corporate communications chief, Midas chairman Tony Mullekin, former Foyles vice chair Bill Samuel, Granta's Brigid Macleod, and former SYP chair Jon Slack.
The charity has relaunched its website http://www.booktradecharity.org" target="_blank" title="booktradecharity.org">booktradecharity.org, and also wants individuals to join its Book Trade Charity Network.
Currently the charity helps around 100 individuals with grants, dispensing some £100,000 a year. It also maintains a residential retreat at Kings Langley.
