The Book Depository has launched an updated version of its website as part of an effort to strengthen its worldwide online sales. It is now offering free shipping to 90 countries, up from 30.
The website was unveiled on Friday (13th February), and "it seems to be going very smoothly," said Kieron Smith, managing director. Changes made to the site include an increased amount of page content, the ability to pre-order and an advanced search engine.
"Customers often turn to search first when they go online, so we needed to be able to offer the very best search and refinement tools so they can find the book they want easily," said Smith. "We’ve built an extremely powerful search engine that looks deep into the bibliographic data of books, and even at detail such as library classifications, to really help make the site work for them."
The turnover in 2007/8 was in excess of £40m and sales in January 2009 saw a 100% increase on last year reaching £8m. Smith said that international sales were extremely important, "especially in the current climate. It's like opening a shop on the high street and not selling to part of the high street," he said.
