Bolton latest to confirm library closures

Five Bolton libraries are to be closed, after a decision by the council's executive earlier today.

According to reporting from the meeting by the Bolton News, the executive voted to select an option which would see five libraries, Astley Bridge, Castle Hill, Highfield, Oxford Grove and Heaton, closed, with other library opening hours being "tiered". Alternative options involving cutting all library hours by up to 38% were rejected.

A poll by the news site's readers voted 78% to 22% against the council's decision. Within the past week, Wakefield has decided to stop funding 12 of 25 libraries, while Dorset has announced that it will close nine of 34 if no volunteers come forward. In Somerset an injunction has been granted to prevent the closure of 11 libraries ahead of a judicial review hearing in September.
