The Bologna Children's Book Fair has issued a warning over a directory listing that could lock publishers into a three-year contract at a "remarkable cost per annum".
The warning, sent via email this week to exhibitors at this year's upcoming Bologna fair, warns: "Directory entry forms sent by Expo Guide, and suggesting that they are from legitimate book fairs such as Bologna, request signatures from publishers for a free listing. Expo Guide is unaffiliated with the book fair, but upon the documents being signed the company will point out that the publisher has signed up for a 3-year contract at a remarkable cost per annum."
It also reminds exhibitors that, by registering for the fair, they automatically have access to their directory entry and company details through the book fair organisation's website, with the cost already included in the fair sign-up fee.
This follows a warning from the Publishers Association last year over the same issue. At the time, the PA's international book fairs manager Gloria Bailey said: "People have signed up for it in the past, and don't read the small print, and then find they've been chased with bailiffs."
Both the PA and Bologna Children's Book Fair advise publishers who are contacted by Book Expo to go through the small print carefully, with Bologna Children's Book Fair organisers saying to get in touch with them if any further clarification is needed.
