In Losing Our Minds: What Mental Illness Really Is—And What It Isn’t academic psychologist Dr Lucy Foulkes will provide an accessible guide to the latest science of mental illness, overturning the notion that we are experiencing an "epidemic" of mental illness, especially among young people.
Drawing on her expert understanding of the scientific literature as well as personal experience, Losing Our Minds will present a comprehensive and sympathetic overview of the state of our current knowledge about the causes and nature of the most prevalent mental illnesses, how and when they develop, and the effectiveness of current treatments.
Foulkes said: “Detailed public knowledge on this topic is still sorely lacking, and that’s doing a disservice to people who are really suffering. In this book, I examine what mental disorders really are, how they interweave with the thoughts and feelings that simply make us human, and why that overlap makes this such a complicated, shifting topic.”
Hammond added: “Lucy Foulkes brings exceptional clarity, rigour and much-needed nuance to bear on a subject that is much discussed but less well understood, and she does so with a profound sympathy for all involved.”
