The Bodley Head has bought a title exploring the biology of violence, aggression and competition, written by Stanford University professor Robert Sapolsky.
Publishing director Will Sulkin bought UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, in the title Human Aggression, Human Compassion And the Ambiguities of Biology, through Max Brockman at Brockman Inc. The Bodley Head will publish in spring 2015.
The book will look at the behaviours and impulses behind violence and competition, and examine the actions of individuals, groups and of States, also looking at what biology teaches us about cooperation, empathy and altruism.
Sulkin said: "Having publishing Robert Sapolsky's A Primate's Memoir and Monkeyluv—and loved them both—I'm thrilled to have acquired rights in his new book. Robert is not just a distinguished neurobiologist, he is also wise, humane and funny and this book promises to be his magnum opus."
