Bodley Head acquires Mallory biog

The Bodley Head has acquired a biography of climber George Mallory by National Geographic explorer-in-residence Wade Davis, with plans to publish in October 2011.

Publishing director Will Sulkin bought UK and Commonwealth rights to Into the Silence: The Great War, Mallory and the Conquest of Everest from Michael Sissons at PFD. Knopf will publish simultaneously in the US.

The book recounts the attempts of Mallory and his fellow climbers to conquer Everest in the early 1920s. Davis has had new access to letters and diaries, and the narrative also takes in the First World War and the effect it had on Britain's image of itself. The title will include 16 pages of illustration.

Sulkin said: "Vivid, gripping, moving and genuinely illuminating, this remarkable book is a biography of George Mallory—and so much more. It tells us about a man and his time, about extraordinary events and what it means to be human. I'm thrilled to be publishing it."

Davis is also the author of books such as The Serpent and the Rainbow and One River (both Pocket Books), and is an award-winning anthropologist.
