Pan Macmillan’s Bluebird Books has pre-empted rights to Emotional Success: Harnessing the Power of Gratitude, Compassion, Pride and Guilt by psychology professor and Yale PhD, David De Steno.
Bluebird’s Carole Tonkinson acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Caspian Dennis at Abner Stein, acting on behalf of James Levine at Levine Greenberg Rostan Literary Agency.
In Emotional Success De Steno shows that by “emphasising willpower and logic as the means to achieve our goals, we may be neglecting the most powerful tools our minds possess to ensure success in life: our social emotions”.
Tonkinson said: “De Steno’s work shows that there are two means to self-control: willpower and cognitive strategies and emotional strategies that rely on the cultivation of specific feelings. Emotional strategies are far more successful: we may be able to resist the cake or for a time, but cultivating emotions like gratitude (or even working with guilt) can help us be more future-oriented and make far better decisions in the long term (healthy choices, fiscal restraint and more socially responsible choices). De Steno’s work ties in effortlessly with the brain changes we’ve seen result from practices like Mindfulness. This takes that work and shows us how to apply it practically for a better life and a better world. I couldn’t be more excited about this book.”
Bluebird will publish Emotional Success in hardback simultaneously with the Eamon Dolan Books in the US in spring 2017.
