Bloomsbury has signed a non-fiction book on the building of the Brooklyn Bridge from former Times literary editor Erica Wagner.
The book, The Chief Engineer: Washington Augustus Roebling and the Brooklyn Bridge, follows Roebling's life during the US Civil War, and the unlikely story of him taking over the landmark bridge project from his father, days after his death from an apparently minor injury.
A film about Roebling's life, starring Daniel Radcliffe in the lead role, is due to be released next year by Goldcrest Films. Douglas McGrath will direct.
Bloomsbury signed world rights to the book. Bill Swainson, senior commissioning editor, said: "The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the great American icons and the story behind its building, especially Washington Roebling’s Civil War experience, is utterly compelling."
The book is planned for release in August 2015.
