Bloomsbury has been nominated for six awards at the Independent Publishing Guild’s annual awards, in a year celebrating the highest number of nominees in the event’s 16-year history.
The Independent Publishing Awards shortlists recognise the success of the indie sector, and this year feature 54 nominations from 34 different companies, including five individuals for the Ola Gotkowska Young Independent Publisher Award and bookcareers.com founder Suzanne Collier for the GBS Services to Independent Publishers Award.
Publishers that have made the shortlists for the first time include Joffe Books, Jacaranda Books, BAR Publishing, Edinburgh University Press and Phoenix Publishing House.
Other publishers with multiple places on the shortlists include David & Charles, Faber, Nosy Crow and Usborne Publishing. Bloomsbury, the reigning champion of the Trade Publisher of the Year award, has been nominated again this year. It is joined in competition for the top prize by Faber and Boldwood Books.
Up for the Ola Gotkowska Young Independent Publisher Award - named in memory of the former Nosy Crow rights manager who passed away earlier this year - is Will Dady, founder of Renard Press, Aliya Gulamani, publisher at Unbound, Elizabeth Neep from SPCK, Frances Sleigh of Nosy Crow and Eleanor Teasdale at Watkins Media.
Two new categories, the Zebralution Audio Award and Virtusales Metadata Award, bring the total number of awards to 14.
The winners will be announced at a gala lunch at the Oxo Tower in London at noon on 27th April. Tickets for the event are available now.
“Last year was a remarkably successful year for the independent publishing sector despite the upheaval of Covid, Brexit, price pressures and more," said IPG c.e.o. Bridget Shine. "The standard of submissions to the Independent Publishing Awards was higher than it has ever been, and it is no surprise that our judges selected a record number of publishers and people for the shortlists. They show the extraordinary resilience, innovation and diversity of UK independent publishing, and we can’t wait to celebrate their achievements at our awards lunch.”
